What a contrast to the biological desert that Rajasthan has become, the Ranthambhor forest is like a balm, it's soothing effect palpable the moment one enters the portals of the massive stone ramparts of the fabled Ranthambhor Fort. Constructed to protect kings, the battlements now defend another threatened monarch - tiger. This is one of the last few habitats capable of supporting viable populations of Panthera Tigris, the Royal Bengal Tiger.

The Ranthambore National Park in the Rajasthan's rugged Sawai Madhopur District. Ranthambore is a wildlife enthusiast's paradise. The town is about 180 kilometres from Jaipur and 360 kilometres from Delhi. Taking a train to this part of Rajasthan is an option you might consider. Situated at the eastern limits of the Aravalli range, the Ranthambore National Park takes its name from the medieval Ranthambore Fort that overlooks it. |
Ranthambore is famous for its tigers, whose population it seeks to increase and sustain. Year after year, thousands of tourists visit the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, including wildlife photographers and foreign dignitaries. The former U.S. President Bill Clinton spotted a tiger at Ranthambore during his last visit to India. Besides the tiger, other animals that have made Ranthambore their home are antelopes, nilgai, sambhar, chital, sloth bear, wild boar and chinkara. You also see Sambhars in abundance at the park. |
